Our Approach
Excellence of design and its successful execution are central to our approach. Our objective is to produce architecture of the highest standard and to provide a professional service covering all aspects of design and project management. Our Architecture is driven by the pursuit of quality and a belief that our surroundings directly influence the quality of our lives, whether in the work place, at home or in the spaces between.
Our approach to design is extremely client-centric. We seek to develop, refine and consolidate the project brief in close collaboration with the client, and with the other project partners.
John Cantrell
Our teams will work in close contact with our client to develop the initial brief. We produce a conceptual design which then evolves over the course of the project from planning stage through to completion.
We are passionate about the design quality of the built environment. We aim to create designs that are timeless, intelligent and sustainable.
Dedicated to environmentally aware and energy efficient design, Cantrell & Crowley avoid the unnecessary overuse of mechanical or technological solutions, and focus on design solutions that produce energy efficient buildings and the use of renewable sources.
Our collaborative project methodology to project design, results in a deep understanding of our Client’s processes and goals. This highly valuable, project specific expertise is informed and enhanced by our internationally experienced design practitioners. Our expertise is shared across the spectrum of design disciplines to ensure an integrated, cohesive, coordinated and sustainable design solution. This holistic approach to design combines research, technical analysis, aesthetic flair, cost management and functional consideration together with the projects operational requirements.

Offering a wide range of design services our team enjoys a reputation for creating high-performance, fiscally responsible and award winning buildings and interiors. We provide full project management services and assemble a multi-discipline team of experienced professionals – architects, engineers, landscape architects, interior designers and technologists – to provide creative and integrated solutions for our Clients.
Our Clients enjoy a single point of contact; a senior member of the design team is directly accountable, thus providing our Clients with the comfort that their interests will be addressed and supported by experienced and committed staff. Our integrated design process strengthens our ability to provide inspirational architecture, value-added design, and technically advanced solutions resulting in world class buildings.
Our processes begin with workshops and meetings that define the Client’s objectives incorporating best practice options and suggestions from the designers. Our team operates from our main offices in Dublin and are also supplemented and enhanced by our collaboration with our local partners in Ireland and the UK.
Our design process begins with the ‘macro’ design considerations including the building’s location, the immediate environment, climate and weather, cultural considerations, aspect, views, orientation, accessibility, adjacencies to public transportation links, roads, existing services, neighbouring sites and any other physical aspects that may influence the design of the building, its massing, orientation or accessibility.
Presentation of our conceptual ideas is followed by a consultative exploration of the alternatives with the Client Team. Once the agreed concept solutions have been finalised we proceed to implement the design detail followed by the production information stages leading to tender documentation and the signing of a construction contract.
Throughout the design process we will be testing the proposals against required design standards as well as the local authorities and utility providers’ requirements. Submissions to these local authorities will be made as soon as the design has been advanced to an appropriate stage.
Our joint design consultancies incorporate large professional teams including architects, engineers and technologists who are experienced in providing thoroughly detailed and coordinated tender packages for construction management projects.
This process develops an effective line of communication among the design team, and the owner’s team, and helps to establish strong support for the project. It encompasses a number of workshop meetings, and direct input from design team culminating with a specification and schematic designs which reflects the projects individual needs.
Our philosophy can be summarized as: People support that which they help create.
We are mindful that each project we take on requires a unique approach negotiated and agreed with the team at the outset. During the design stages of the project we provide regular reports of processes and progress, which keep our clients fully aware of timing and other issues. We believe we should be the major driving force in the process. Throughout these stages, we hold a series of design and technical workshops and reviews, in order to ensure that we are achieving design and technical excellence and coordination from the outset. This is in line with our Quality Assurance Procedures.
Our Process
We invite the client and project team to fully partake in these workshops in order to engender a sense of ‘Shared Ownership’ of the design of the project. We may recommend that mock-ups, computer generated images or physical models be constructed to further review areas such as buildability and aesthetics.
At the end of each defined project stage, drawings and a sign-off document will be issued in line with the agreed schedule of deliverables. Once sign-off has been received from the client, the next stage of work is embarked upon. Any comments received from the client team is incorporated into the next stage of work. In addition, the master design stage program updated to reflect any changes from the original project program.
Our approach is a tried and tested process which has served our clients well for over 20 years, resulting in renowned award-winning buildings for people to live, work, play and ultimately enjoy for many years to come.
