Project Description:

Tommy’s Cottage is a refurbishment and extension project located on the coastline of Mannin Bay, County Galway. The design balances traditional rural Connemara forms with contemporary architecture, incorporating a timber-clad extension that contrasts and complements the original cottage. The site’s sloping landscape and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean are key elements of the design, which respects the historical narrative of the original structure while introducing modern touches. A glazed link connects the old and new sections, allowing natural light to flow through the interior and blending past and present harmoniously.

The restoration uses traditional materials to preserve the cottage’s rustic charm, while the new extension, with its clean lines and timber cladding, reflects a contemporary architectural approach. The restrained material palette, including sustainable timber and a minimalist landscape design, ensures the project blends naturally into its coastal surroundings.
